Mesothelioma types can be classified by a variety of factors. The two major classifications include Benign (Papillary) Mesothelioma and Malignant Mesothelioma.

Benign mesothelioma occurs very rarely with a variation of the disease called “papillary” mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma is generally found in the lining around the uterus. Benign tumor cells are not considered to be cancerous or fatal and they will not invade other areas of the body.

Malignant mesothelioma encompasses the majority of mesothelioma cases. Malignant cancer cells can continue to grow and divide, giving the cancerous cells the ability to invade other parts of the body. This type of cancer can be very difficult to control or eliminate even with treatment.

Where the Cancer Originated

Malignant mesothelioma can be further categorized into three main types based on the location where the cancer begins.

Pleural Mesothelioma originates in the chest cavity in the lining that surrounds the lungs, called the “pleura”, and is the most common type of mesothelioma.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma originates in the lining of the stomach or abdomen.

Pericardial Mesothelioma occurs when the cancer originates in the lining around the heart. This type of mesothelioma is uncommon, occurring in less than 10 percent of mesothelioma cases.

Testicular Mesothelioma is the least common form of mesothelioma.  It originates in the testes or tunica vaginalis testis.

Type of Tissue Involved

Malignant mesothelioma can also be categorized by the type of tissue that is involved.

Epithelial Mesothelioma cells are constructed of “epithelium” tissue that is found throughout much of the body. Epithelial mesothelioma is often the least aggressive form of mesothelioma.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma cells are constructed of “sarcomatous” cell tissue and are generally a more aggressive cancer type.

Biphasic (or Mixed) Mesothelioma occurs when cancer cells are constructed from a mixture of epithelium and sarcomatous cells.

It is important to understand the differences between the various types of mesothelioma, as these types affect mesothelioma treatment options.

All forms of malignant mesothelioma share a cause – asbestos exposure. Compensation may be available to victims suffering from mesothelioma. If you would like to learn more about your legal rights to compensations, CLICK HERE.
